Overall the story was good。 It had some issues, like a slightly problematic relationship, repetitive writing, uninteresting/a certain disconnect with characters, and fell into some tropes a little too much。 However, it was kinda gritty, fast paced, and interesting despite its issues。

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this。 Sometimes I forget that I like science fiction and avoid it for a while, but this was really good! It was easy to follow the changing points of view, and it was a compelling story。 Left a good opening to the next book without it being an abrupt cutoff。

A little slow on the pacing for my taste but really great character development。

I’ve seen the show so I already knew I would probably like the books, and I’ve not been disappointed! It may have actually helped to see the show first to keep better track of the many characters and complex plot。 I think what I like most is that the authors (Corey is actually two people) are very no-nonsense; they give you the info you need but throw you right into the action without the lengthy introductory section that weighs down so many novels。 Fast-paced, unique sci-fi action story with so I’ve seen the show so I already knew I would probably like the books, and I’ve not been disappointed! Leviathan Wakes, and The Expanse in general, is the definitive modern space opera。 The first book in the series introduces the world of the Expanse masterfully, setting a slightly depressing tone that carries on through the rest of the series。 The world is well realized, with very realistic feeling politics and technological advancement。 Every asteroid or planet the crew encounters feels alive and lived in, and I can’t think of another sci-fi book that explores solar system colonization as reali Leviathan Wakes, and The Expanse in general, is the definitive modern space opera。 The first book in the series introduces the world of the Expanse masterfully, setting a slightly depressing tone that carries on through the rest of the series。 The world is well realized, with very realistic feeling politics and technological advancement。 Every asteroid or planet the crew encounters feels alive and lived in, and I can’t think of another sci-fi book that explores solar system colonization as realistically and in depth as the Expanse。 For this reason alone the book is worth reading, but unlike most other sci-do, this one has some pretty great characters as well, Miller and Amos standing out as the best of the bunch so far。 The biggest thing holding this book back is that Holden is by far the weakest character, which makes it crazy that this book is as enjoyable as it is with half of the book following a bland protagonist。 The plot is incredible, with very slight lulls in the pace, and it’s clear that the stakes will only raise higher and higher from this book on。 Leviathan Wakes is a fantastic introduction to a fantastic series and is a must read for any sci-fi fan。 。。。more

So I was expecting a more light-hearted (at least partly humorous) space opera but this is more hard-boiled mystery in space, not my favorite genre but overall a strong start to this series。

The Expanse is some of the science fiction and space drama ever written!

Okay, so starting off I really disliked this。 It did that thing I hate with Sci-Fi where there’s annoying slang and they don’t actually explain anything。 Everything just is and you have to sort of work your brain around a whole new way of the world working without any help from the author。 But then it got… I dunno。 There was no turning point in the story where it suddenly got interesting I just sort of got dragged into the story。 I think it was the mystery elements。 You had the slower pace of Mi Okay, so starting off I really disliked this。 It did that thing I hate with Sci-Fi where there’s annoying slang and they don’t actually explain anything。 Everything just is and you have to sort of work your brain around a whole new way of the world working without any help from the author。 But then it got… I dunno。 There was no turning point in the story where it suddenly got interesting I just sort of got dragged into the story。 I think it was the mystery elements。 You had the slower pace of Miller’s POV to start, wondering why you were even there while Holden’s POV was constant action。 Then things slowly came together and it was pretty amazing。 A slow build to a really good story。 The one thing I didn’t like, and it’s not even a criticism either, was what the protomolecule did。 The descriptions were vivid and disturbing and I found myself sort of skimming over them so I didn’t get too much of a vision in my mind of it cause it was just so so gross。 。。。more

A soap-opera in space。 It’s engaging and there’s nothing wrong with the writing itself, it’s just that the book has no vision, no creativity。The characters are all rehashes (the jarhead, the noire detective, the affable happygolucky captain, the serious&sexy XO he has a crush on etc)。 The tech is literally present day plus a “faster” engine。 While the overarching story? It’s a freaking government conspiracy with some zombies thrown in。 The authors did do a good job at copying Stephen King’s meat A soap-opera in space。 It’s engaging and there’s nothing wrong with the writing itself, it’s just that the book has no vision, no creativity。The characters are all rehashes (the jarhead, the noire detective, the affable happygolucky captain, the serious&sexy XO he has a crush on etc)。 The tech is literally present day plus a “faster” engine。 While the overarching story? I was surprised by how captivated by this I was - not your average space war。 Holden is surprisingly empathetic, and the action kept me guessing while rarely slowing。

So I saw this book on sale and downloaded a sample to try it out。 By the time, I decided that it was worth reading, it was no longer on sale but I bought it anyway。 It’s interesting science fiction。 It really deals with racism as it is on Earth now but substituting out the present racial groups for new ones far into the future。 Surprisingly, I am on the side of the main characters who are part of the oppressed group in the books rather than the characters who are in the oppressors’ racial group。 So I saw this book on sale and downloaded a sample to try it out。 By the time, I decided that it was worth reading, it was no longer on sale but I bought it anyway。 It’s interesting science fiction。 It really deals with racism as it is on Earth now but substituting out the present racial groups for new ones far into the future。 Surprisingly, I am on the side of the main characters who are part of the oppressed group in the books rather than the characters who are in the oppressors’ racial group。 Usually, I just stand on the side of the majority rather than the underdog。 I like stability not revolution。 I guess I like the Belter characters more because they are the ones advocating for stability unlike the Inner Planets ones whose actions lead to revolution。 。。。more

in the preface to this, the authors mentioned that they wanted to make sci-fi that was accessible and that's the word that kept coming back to me as i was reading this because it was every bit jUST THAT。 for such a ridiculously complex setting, it all felt like utterly light reading and i'm not really sure why。 it wasn't missing any of the science or mechanics, but somehow it never got bogged down - even in just that one paragraph - with it。 i loved the characters so very much, especially miller in the preface to this, the authors mentioned that they wanted to make sci-fi that was accessible and that's the word that kept coming back to me as i was reading this because it was every bit jUST THAT。 for such a ridiculously complex setting, it all felt like utterly light reading and i'm not really sure why。 it wasn't missing any of the science or mechanics, but somehow it never got bogged down - even in just that one paragraph - with it。 i loved the characters so very much, especially miller and julie, and the plot was freaking aces。 i can't wait to read the next one!! 。。。more

I don't read much fanfiction, so I'm not sure how to rate this one。Why is it that every Western sci-fi author is obsessed with The Canterbury Tales, Don Quixote, hegemonies, and space-hookers?It didn't do the original Three-Body Problem universe justice, but I suppose the writing fits well with stuff I occasionally torture myself with on Wattpad。 I found the WPMs ('was'-es per minute) to be off the charts in places。The authors chose to kind of skip over details like, you know, what it looks like I don't read much fanfiction, so I'm not sure how to rate this one。Why is it that every Western sci-fi author is obsessed with The Canterbury Tales, Don Quixote, hegemonies, and space-hookers?It didn't do the original Three-Body Problem universe justice, but I suppose the writing fits well with stuff I occasionally torture myself with on Wattpad。 I found the WPMs ('was'-es per minute) to be off the charts in places。The authors chose to kind of skip over details like, you know, what it looks like to live in space。 But they did describe, in excruciating detail, every single time that a *hot* not-white girl happened to be around。The self-inserts of the two white dudes who wrote this book were a bit much at times, and I found the plot fairly standard for most sci-fi, only there were two heroes this time—one for each author。 It seemed obvious that the authors wanted to both play Han Solo in their fly-ships-around-the-basement game, but they really should rock-paper-scissored that decision before writing to clear up some of the protagonist confusion。2/5 stars。 Hopefully, the TV show creators cleaned up a lot of the problems when writing a script。 。。。more
